Introduction to Influence Lines
- Introduction
Influence lines are used to determine where to place loads on structures such that they cause the maximum possible destructive effect on the structure. Using an influence line assures the engineer that there is no combination or positioning of loads which could cause a greater action (reaction, axial force, shear, or moment) at the selected point in the structure. They further permit you to calculate the magnitude of these maximum actions, for use in design.
- Instructional Objective
As a result of reading this module a student should be able to tell the purpose of influence lines and under what conditions they are used in engineering.
