Address questions regarding Assignment #11. |
Application of the principles of Conservation of Linear Momentum (COLM) to problems |
involving variable mass. |
Examples are presented in Worked Problem Set #12. |
Skills/Objectives: |
Solve COLM problems that involve mass entering and leaving the system. |
Assessment: |
Homework Set #12: Work Homework problems 19-80, 81, 83, 84, 85 and 88 (due on Day 13). |
Resources: |
Reference #4, Glover Chapter 5 (pp. 105-124). |
Notes: |
The solution to each problem MUST include a units table, all necessary system diagrams, |
all necessary conservation tables, and then the solution. |
It is of particular importance to point out to the students that the approach to variable |
mass problems taken by R/S employs the relative input and output velocities while the |
COLM approach used in the class employs velocities with respect to fixed reference frames. |
