Application of the principles of Conservation of Linear Momentum (COLM) to problems
involving variable mass.
 
Examples are presented in Worked Problem Set #12.

Solve COLM problems that involve mass entering and leaving the system.

Homework Set #12: Work Homework problems 19-80, 81, 83, 84, 85 and 88 (due on Day 13).

Reference #4, Glover Chapter 5 (pp. 105-124).
Notes:
 
The solution to each problem MUST include a units table, all necessary system diagrams,
all necessary conservation tables, and then the solution.
 
It is of particular importance to point out to the students that the approach to variable
mass problems taken by R/S employs the relative input and output velocities while the
COLM approach used in the class employs velocities with respect to fixed reference frames.
