Day 2

Day 2
Content:

Complete discussion begun in Reference #1.

Introduce the four fundamental quantities used in mechanics: length, time, mass and
force. Define a consistent system of units where three of the fundamental units are
defined by the analyst and the fourth is calculated using Newton's second law.
Introduce US customary and SI units.

Introduce the units table that must accompany all problems worked in this class.
Units Table
Length
Time
Mass
Force
$g$

Discuss density $\rho$, unit weight $\gamma$, volumetric flow rate $Q=AV$ and mass flow rate $=\rho AV$.

Introduce the concept of Conservation of Mass (COM) referring to Chapter 3 of Glover
(pp. 35-39) and Reference #2. Introduce finite time and rate COM tables as shown in
Reference #2.

Example problems are presented in Worked Problem Set #2.

Skills/Objectives:

Use of consistent sets of units and the use of COM tables.
Assessment:

Homework Set #2: Work odd or even problems 1-1 through 1-24 R/S (due on Day 3).
Resources:

Reference #1, Chapter 3 of Glover (pp. 35-59), Reference #2, Worked Problem Set #2.
Notes:

From this point forward, all problems in this class must be worked using consistent units
with a units table presented for each problem.
Advanced Organizers:

Read pp. 35-59 in Glover, review Reference #2. Locate special mass flow problems in
Homework Set #3 and review them (due on Day 4).
