Review problems with Homework Set #5. |
Introduce the application of Conservation of Linear Momentum (COLM) to 2-D and 3-D |
statics problems involving concurrent forces. |
Discuss the behavior of ropes, cables, wires, etc. These members experience either tension |
or no force. |
Discuss generalities of 2-force members such as struts and links. The forces in these |
members are aligned with the longitudinal axis of the member and can be either tension |
or compression. However, these concepts cannot be proved until conservation of angular |
momentum is introduced later in the course. |
Examples are presented in Worked Problem Set #6. |
Skills/Objectives: |
Solution of COLM problems. |
Assessment: |
Homework Set #6: Work problems 3-11, 12, 14, 20, 21, 23 and 26 (due on Day 7). |
Resources: |
Reference #4, Glover Chapter 5 (pp. 105-124), Worked Problem Set #6. |
Notes: |
The solution to each problem MUST include a units table, all necessary system diagrams, |
all necessary conservation tables, and then the solution. |
Caution the students to avoid the form of the solutions presented in R/S Chapter 3. |
