Summary

The Appendix reviews and develops most all of the mathematical concepts necessary to understand basic continuum mechanics. In the first section the basic concepts and operations with matrices are reviewed such as addition and scalar multiplication, as well as the inner product, cross product and tensor product of vectors. Vector calculus is then introduced with the definition of the Del operator in rectangular and cylindrical coordinate systems, which is then used to define the gradient of a scalar field and the divergence and curl of a vector field. In the second section the symbolic computation features of the Scientific Workplace software package are used to solve several example problems from vector algebra and vector calculus.
