Course Objectives
- To provide sophomore engineering students with practical knowledge and a reference base useful in the materials selection process
- To instill in students the relationships between macroscopic physical properties (including mechanical, optical, thermal, electrical, and magnetic properties) and microscopic causes based on fundamental principles (including chemical bonding, crystal structure, and microstructure)
- To give students the ability to describe the differences in macroscopic physical properties of metals, polymers, ceramics, semiconductors, and composite materials in terms of microscopic causes
- To enable students with the ability to predict microstructures and mechanical properties from phase diagrams
- To introduce laboratory experimentation and presentation of results in materials testing
- To verify the knowledge transferred through written examinations and quizzes, laboratory reports, written assignments, a materials selection project, and group participation
